My First River Cruise: Europe with Riverside Luxury Cruises

I have been on more than ten cruises across the world—everything from adventurous expedition ships to sailing vessels in the Mediterranean. But until this fall, I had never experienced a river cruise.

Now that I have, I can confidently say: everyone should experience river cruising at least once in their life.

It is an entirely different way to travel. It’s calm, intimate, effortless, and the complete opposite of the busy, high-energy environment that can come with large ocean ships. There are no waves, no motion sickness, no overwhelming crowds or endless decks to navigate. Instead, you’re gliding smoothly along the river, with beautiful scenery on both sides and historic cities just steps from where the ship docks.

For seven days I sailed with Riverside Luxury Cruises through the heart of Europe, visiting five countries in one week: Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary. Even with so much to see, the pace felt wonderfully relaxed. It was luxury at its finest paired with meaningful cultural immersion.

Why Riverside?

Riverside is truly redefining river cruising. A few standouts from my experience:

• The most comfortable beds I’ve ever slept on at sea
• Suite lighting that sets the mood perfectly, from bright daytime to soft evening ambiance
• Spacious bathrooms with heated towel racks (heaven after a cool, rainy day ashore)
• Japanese-style toilets with heated seats and all the extras
• A genuinely happy, passionate crew who clearly love what they do
• Elevated dining throughout, especially the intimate Vintage Room—a multi-course wine-paired chef’s tasting with the sommelier guiding each pour

Every detail felt thoughtful and intentional.

The Journey: Five Countries in Seven Days

We began in Munich and then headed to Passau to board the ship. Our first major stop was Linz, Austria, where I chose an optional excursion to Český Krumlov in the Czech Republic. This medieval fairytale town quickly became a favorite of mine.

Next was Grein, Austria, where we toured the historic Greinburg Castle before sailing onward to Dürnstein. That evening, we enjoyed a night walk through the village, stopping for apricot jam, mustards, and schnapps—this region is famous for its apricot specialties.

From there, we reached Vienna. I spent the day exploring city highlights and the Fine Arts Museum, which was incredible. That night, Riverside hosted a private signature event: a VIP evening at Belvedere Palace with a classical orchestra and opera singers. It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments.

The next day took us to Bratislava, Slovakia, just a short distance from Vienna. I loved wandering the charming old streets and trying local dishes, including an authentic sauerkraut soup that was delicious.

In Esztergom, Hungary, I joined an e-bike tour and even briefly crossed a bridge into Slovakia again for fun. It was such a unique way to explore the region.

Our final sailing day brought us into Budapest, one of the most spectacular river approaches in Europe. I explored by e-bike again and later attended another special Riverside event: a private champagne concert inside the ornate Wenckheim Palace.

I extended my stay for two nights at the Aria Hotel, perfectly located near St. Stephen’s Basilica. Budapest completely exceeded my expectations. It’s grand and beautiful, full of history, thermal baths, great food, and stunning architecture—especially when the city lights up at night along the Danube.

Wellness on the Water

One aspect of Riverside Luxury Cruises that truly surprised me was the focus on wellness. The ship’s spa was exceptional, offering a full hydrotherapy circuit including a sauna, steam bath, hot tub, and even a cold pool with a wave simulator that was both invigorating and energizing. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring historic towns and castles.

I also enjoyed one of the most relaxing facials I’ve ever experienced, followed later by a massage that left me feeling restored and refreshed. The spa team was professional, attentive, and created such a calm, warm environment that I found myself wanting to go back daily.

And a special highlight for me personally: I was invited to teach a yoga class onboard. Leading a gentle session as the sun rose over the river was incredibly peaceful and such a beautiful reminder of how wellness and travel can complement each other perfectly.

River cruising isn’t just about seeing new places. It’s also about slowing down, taking care of yourself, and fully savoring each moment.

Fall: A Perfect Time to Visit Europe

This was my first time traveling to Europe in the fall, and I highly recommend it. Cooler weather, fewer crowds, colorful foliage, and the first hints of holiday markets being set up—everything felt peaceful and enjoyable. It was such a refreshing change from peak tourist season.

Final Thoughts

River cruising is relaxing, enriching, and a surprisingly efficient way to see multiple destinations without ever feeling rushed. You unpack once, and the world comes to you.

If you are thinking about Europe—whether for summer vineyards, fall foliage, or winter holiday markets—Riverside Luxury Cruises is an exceptional option. I am already dreaming about my next river sailing.

If you’re curious to try river cruising yourself, I would love to help you plan a trip that matches your travel style and wish list.

Warm regards,
